Pakistan’s automotive industry is entering a new era with the introduction of Range-Extended Electric Vehicles (REEVs), offering drivers a blend of electric performance and long-distance convenience.
Two models leading this innovation are the Forthing Friday REEV, launched by Capital Smart Motors, and the Deepal S05 REEV, introduced by Changan Pakistan.
Both compact SUVs aim to make electric mobility more practical in a country where charging infrastructure is still in its early stages.
Understanding REEV Technology
A Range-Extended Electric Vehicle (REEV) operates primarily on electric power stored in its battery pack but includes a small petrol engine that functions as a generator to recharge the battery when its charge drops.
Unlike traditional hybrids, the combustion engine in a REEV doesn’t drive the wheels directly — it only produces electricity.
This allows drivers to enjoy the smoothness and eco-friendly benefits of an EV while maintaining the freedom to travel long distances without depending on charging stations.
In Pakistan’s context, where EV charging facilities are limited, REEVs such as the Deepal S05 and Forthing Friday offer an ideal middle ground between innovation, affordability, and practicality.
Design and Dimensions
The Deepal S05 REEV represents a major step forward for Changan, being the brand’s first model equipped with a combustion engine used purely for charging purposes. It boasts a bold and futuristic design with a focus on aerodynamic efficiency and urban-friendly proportions.
The Forthing Friday REEV, on the other hand, exudes a more premium appearance, catering to drivers who prefer a sleek, executive-style SUV with strong road presence.
In terms of size, the Deepal S05 measures 4620 mm in length, 1900 mm in width, and 1600 mm in height, making it slightly larger than the Forthing Friday’s 4600 × 1860 × 1680 mm dimensions. Its 2880 mm wheelbase also provides a more spacious interior compared to Friday’s 2715 mm wheelbase.
Performance and Powertrain
Both the Deepal S05 and Forthing Friday come equipped with a 1.5L petrol engine paired with an electric motor, forming a range-extended hybrid setup. The Deepal produces 215 horsepower and 320 Nm of torque, while the Forthing delivers 204 horsepower and 340 Nm of torque.
Driving dynamics differ slightly — the Deepal S05 features a rear-wheel-drive system, offering a sportier and more balanced driving experience, whereas the Forthing Friday uses a front-wheel-drive setup for improved traction and stability.
When it comes to range, the Deepal S05 offers an electric-only range of 145 km and a combined driving range of 1,012 km, which surpasses the Forthing Friday’s EV range of 80–85 km and overall range of 943 km. This gives the S05 a clear advantage for long-distance journeys.
Battery and Charging Capabilities
The Deepal S05 comes with a 27.28 kWh battery, while the Forthing Friday packs a slightly larger 31.94 kWh unit. Despite the difference, the S05’s efficiency enables it to travel farther on a single charge.
In terms of charging performance, the Forthing Friday supports faster DC charging up to 90 kW, compared to Deepal’s 54.5 kW. However, the S05 counters with a superior Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) output of 6.6 kW, compared to Friday’s 3.5 kW, allowing users to power external devices such as appliances and electronics conveniently.
Interior and Features
Both REEVs offer a modern and feature-rich cabin, equipped with digital displays and premium materials. The Deepal S05 takes the lead with a 15.4-inch infotainment screen and a 14-speaker sound system, providing a more immersive in-car experience.
Meanwhile, the Forthing Friday features a 14.6-inch central display and six speakers, still offering advanced connectivity and entertainment options. Both models are equipped with six airbags, ensuring safety for all occupants.
Price and Value
In terms of pricing, the Deepal S05 is more affordable at Rs. 9,999,000, while the Forthing Friday is priced at Rs. 10,999,000.
Considering its lower price and superior range, the Deepal S05 presents a stronger value proposition for Pakistani buyers looking for efficiency, technology, and driving comfort.
Verdict: Which REEV Wins?
Both the Deepal S05 and Forthing Friday bring impressive technology and forward-thinking engineering to Pakistan’s growing REEV market.
The Forthing Friday stands out for its faster charging speed and higher torque, appealing to those who prioritize performance and convenience.
However, the Deepal S05 REEV ultimately takes the lead with its longer range, rear-wheel-drive performance, advanced infotainment system, and competitive price tag.
It offers a well-balanced mix of power, practicality, and innovation — making it the more compelling choice for Pakistan’s next-generation SUV enthusiasts.
