Karachi, August 11, 2025 – The Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) has called on the federal government to immediately withdraw retrospective gas billings imposed on industrial and commercial consumers.
Addressing a press conference, FPCCI President Atif Ikram Sheikh, Regional Chairman and Vice President Zain Iftikhar Chaudhry, along with other senior leaders, appealed directly to Prime Minister Mian Shehbaz Sharif, Petroleum Minister Ali Pervez Malik, and all relevant regulatory bodies to intervene without delay.
The FPCCI leadership criticized the Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) for issuing hefty retrospective gas bills without prior notice or stakeholder consultation, terming it an unjust and damaging move for Pakistan’s economy.
According to the FPCCI, such unilateral decisions create financial instability, disrupt business planning, and jeopardize the survival of countless enterprises—particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). They warned that the unexpected burden could lead to reduced production, closure of factories, and loss of export orders, thereby worsening the already fragile economic situation.
The business leaders argued that instead of facilitating industry through reduced input costs and competitive energy tariffs, the government has added to the financial strain. They expressed concerns over the legality and transparency of the billing process, urging authorities to not only revoke the decision but also ensure that similar actions are avoided in the future.
Other speakers, including FPCCI Vice President Zaki Aijaz, Vice President Tariq Jadoon, and prominent chamber representatives, unanimously vowed that the business community will continue to resist this measure until it is reversed.
