FPCCI urges government to restore SRO 760 without delay

Federation of Pakistan Chambers

Karachi, August 27, 2025 – The Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) has made an urgent appeal to the federal government for the immediate restoration of SRO 760, warning that prolonged suspension could severely damage Pakistan’s gold jewelry export sector.

Atif Ikram Sheikh, President FPCCI, announced that the apex trade body has formally written to Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, urging swift action to reinstate SRO 760. He emphasized that this measure is vital for fulfilling pending export orders and reviving the country’s gold jewelry industry, which has historically contributed significantly to foreign exchange earnings.

Sheikh explained that the suspension of SRO 760 on May 6, 2025, has paralyzed the sector for over three months, disrupting export schedules and undermining the confidence of global buyers. Many exporters had already received raw gold from their overseas partners under verified contracts and crafted jewelry consignments before the suspension, but these shipments have since been stalled.

The FPCCI chief further revealed that a high-level government committee has reviewed past transactions and found no evidence of malpractice or misuse of the SRO. The Ministry of Commerce has also forwarded a summary recommending restoration to the Prime Minister’s Office, where it awaits final approval.

Patron-in-Chief of UBG, S. M. Tanveer, warned that the ongoing disruption could lead to legal disputes, loss of international market share, and long-term reputational harm for Pakistan. He stressed that immediate intervention from the Prime Minister is crucial to safeguard the country’s export-driven economic strategy and to prevent irreversible damage to a key industry.
