A Game of Thrones movie is officially in development at Warner Bros., with a script already submitted by acclaimed writer Beau Willimon, according to a March 3 report by Page Six.
Willimon, best known for his work on Andor and House of Cards, is attached to pen the screenplay. While plot details remain tightly under wraps, early reports suggest the film could focus on Aegon I Targaryen, the legendary conqueror who founded the Targaryen dynasty centuries before the events of the HBO hit series.
Aegon’s Conquest Could Reach the Big Screen
Aegon I has never appeared on screen in the original series, but his legacy looms large over the franchise. His bloodline includes iconic characters such as Daenerys Targaryen, portrayed by Emilia Clarke.
If greenlit, the project would mark the first theatrical adaptation of the Game of Thrones universe, expanding beyond television for the first time.
Corporate Shake-Up Could Impact Development
The film’s future may depend on ongoing corporate changes. Warner Bros. is reportedly in the process of being sold to Skydance Media in a deal involving Paramount Global. Should the merger proceed, new leadership could reassess projects currently in development.
However, CEO David Ellison has pledged to release 30 films theatrically once the companies combine — suggesting major franchises like Game of Thrones could play a central role in that strategy.
Expanding George R.R. Martin’s Fantasy Universe
Based on the bestselling novels by George R. R. Martin, Game of Thrones ran for eight seasons and became an Emmy-winning cultural phenomenon. Its legacy continues with spinoffs such as House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
A feature film centered on Aegon’s conquest would signal the franchise’s most ambitious expansion yet — bringing Westeros to theatres for the first time.
