Fans of Game of Thrones may soon return to Westeros sooner than expected, as multiple new sequels to the global hit series are reportedly in development. According to a report by Screen Rant, these upcoming live-action projects could premiere before author George R.R. Martin completes The Winds of Winter, the long-awaited sixth book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series.
Since the original HBO series concluded in 2019, the network has expanded the franchise through various spin-offs. House of the Dragon has led the charge, with its third season scheduled for release in summer 2026. Another highly anticipated prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, adapted from Martin’s Dunk and Egg novellas, will debut in January 2026.
In November 2025, Martin confirmed that development extends beyond prequels, noting that “a sequel or two” are actively being discussed. Industry reports indicate that at least five or six spin-offs—including sequels—are in early stages, signalling HBO’s long-term commitment to the universe of Westeros.
Yet, an uncomfortable reality remains for book readers: Martin is still working on The Winds of Winter, which has been in progress since 2011. The final planned book, A Dream of Spring, also remains unwritten. This means viewers may experience new Westerosi adventures on screen long before the original book saga reaches its long-promised conclusion.
With Martin’s vast world offering endless narrative possibilities, potential sequels could explore major post-series storylines or smaller character-driven arcs. Regardless of direction, one thing is clear—Game of Thrones looks set to continue evolving on television, even as readers keep waiting for the final chapters of the legendary fantasy series.
