George Russell made a powerful start to the Formula One season by winning the Australian Grand Prix, the opening race of the 2026 Formula One World Championship, leading a dominant one-two finish for Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team.
Russell started from pole position at Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne and eventually finished ahead of teammate Kimi Antonelli, giving Mercedes an emphatic victory in the first race under Formula 1’s sweeping new technical regulations focused on enhanced battery deployment and energy management.
Dramatic Start and Early Battle
Despite Russell’s pole position, Charles Leclerc of Scuderia Ferrari produced a lightning start, jumping from fourth on the grid to take the early lead. The opening laps saw Russell and Leclerc engage in an intense tactical battle, trading positions as they strategically deployed battery power and overtaking boosts.
The race’s key moment came on lap 11 when a Virtual Safety Car (VSC) was triggered after Isack Hadjar stopped his Red Bull Racing car due to a suspected hydraulic failure.
Mercedes reacted immediately by pitting both Russell and Antonelli. Ferrari, however, kept Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton out on track — a strategy that ultimately cost them crucial positions.
Strategy Misstep Hurts Ferrari
Ferrari’s hopes of regaining the advantage were dashed on lap 18 when Valtteri Bottas stopped his Cadillac Formula 1 Team car, bringing out another VSC. With Bottas’ car positioned near the pit lane entry, race control closed the pit lane, preventing Ferrari from making a cheap stop.
Leclerc and Hamilton eventually pitted under full racing conditions on laps 25 and 28, dropping behind both Mercedes drivers.
From that point, Russell controlled the race comfortably to secure victory — the first time in his career he has led the drivers’ championship.
“I’m feeling incredible. It was a tough fight early on, especially with Charles,” Russell said after the race. “Huge thanks to the team — we couldn’t have started the season in a better way.”
