Google Drive continues to enhance its video experience with a series of new features, and the latest update introduces Google Vids integration, making video editing more accessible directly in the cloud.
Over the past few months, Google has rolled out improvements such as automatic captioning, instant playback for newly uploaded videos, YouTube-style thumbnail previews, and time-stamped transcripts. Now, users will be able to edit their videos without leaving Drive.
The new feature will display a purple Google Vids icon in the top-right corner when a supported video file is opened. By clicking the icon, the video loads into Google Vids, where users can trim footage, add background music, insert text overlays, and enrich videos with other media elements.
While the editing tools are fairly basic, the convenience lies in their entirely cloud-based functionality, removing the need for heavy software installations. Once edits are completed, a new Vids file is generated, though Google may eventually streamline this with in-place editing in future updates.
There are, however, some limitations. The integration only supports MP4, QuickTime, OGG, and WebM video formats, with restrictions on file size (under 4GB) and duration (less than 35 minutes). Additionally, the feature is not available to free Google Drive accounts. Instead, it will roll out exclusively to eligible Google Workspace domains, which include:
Business Starter, Standard, and Plus
Enterprise Starter, Standard, and Plus
Essentials and Enterprise Essentials (including Plus)
Nonprofits
Customers with Gemini Education or Education Premium add-ons
Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers
Previous Gemini Business or Enterprise customers
Google confirms that the rollout will begin within the next 15 days, with full availability expected soon. While the feature is optimized for desktop browsers, mobile users should also be able to make light edits, though with some limitations in precision.
With this update, Google Drive strengthens its position as not just a cloud storage platform, but also a lightweight video editing solution, giving Workspace users more reasons to keep their workflow entirely within Google’s ecosystem.
