Google Expands Visual Search to Chrome and Google App on iOS

Google is rolling out a new visual search feature for iOS users, bringing the functionality of Circle to Search to Chrome and the Google app.

However, instead of calling it “Circle to Search,” Google is branding it as “Search Screen with Google Lens.”

This new feature is accessible through the three-dot menu in Chrome for iOS and the Google app. Once selected, users can perform searches using intuitive gestures such as drawing, highlighting, or tapping on objects of interest. This update aims to simplify the search experience, allowing users to find information without taking a screenshot or opening a new tab.

iOS Limitations Compared to Android

Unlike the Android version of Circle to Search, which works system-wide, the iOS version is restricted to Chrome and the Google app. Apple’s ecosystem does not permit deep system-wide integrations from third-party apps, limiting Google’s ability to implement this feature beyond its own applications. Despite this constraint, the new search method remains a convenient tool for quickly performing visual searches while browsing.

Faster Access with Google Lens Integration

Google is also introducing a new Google Lens icon in Chrome’s address bar. This enhancement, expected in the coming months, will provide even quicker access to visual search, eliminating the need to navigate through menus. By integrating this feature directly into Chrome’s UI, Google aims to streamline the search experience for iOS users.

Global Rollout Begins This Week

The update enabling Search Screen with Google Lens is rolling out globally this week. It will be available in both Chrome for iOS and the Google app, ensuring that users worldwide can benefit from this improved search functionality.

AI Overviews Enhance Google Lens Capabilities

In addition to this update, Google is enhancing Google Lens with AI Overviews, similar to those found in Google Search. This AI-powered feature will help users identify objects more efficiently and provide links to helpful resources on the web. By leveraging artificial intelligence, Google aims to enhance the accuracy and usefulness of visual search results.

As Google continues refining its search tools, these updates mark another step toward making visual search more intuitive and accessible for iOS users.
