Google has officially released Android 17 Beta 1 for eligible Pixel devices after briefly pausing the rollout earlier.
The update is now available again through the Android Beta Program, bringing improvements focused on app adaptability, camera performance, and device connectivity.
Android 17 Beta 1 continues Google’s push toward more flexible apps that work smoothly across different screen sizes and device types. The release also introduces enhancements to camera and media capabilities, aiming to improve image processing and multimedia handling across supported hardware. Additionally, expanded companion device profiles are included to strengthen connections between Android devices and accessories.
As part of its evolving development strategy, Google has replaced traditional Developer Previews with the Android Canary channel. This continuous testing channel allows features and APIs to appear earlier once internal testing is complete.
The approach is designed to improve overall stability by identifying issues sooner and refining features before broader beta adoption. Canary also supports over-the-air updates, making testing easier for developers and removing the need for manual installations.
Google confirmed that Android 17 will reach its Platform Stability milestone as early as next month. The company also outlined quarterly update plans, including a major Q2 2026 release expected to introduce behavior changes that may impact app compatibility. A smaller SDK update is scheduled for Q4.
Users already enrolled in the Android Beta Program with eligible Pixel devices will receive Android 17 Beta 1 automatically via OTA update. Those without supported devices can test the platform using 64-bit system images through the Android Emulator in Android Studio.
