Google’s latest Feature Drop is rolling out, bringing a host of innovative capabilities to Pixel devices. This update includes the introduction of Gemini Nano to Pixel 8 and Pixel 8a as a developer option, and the addition of Car Crash Detection to the Pixel Watch 2, among other features.
Enhancements for Pixel Phones
Gemini Nano Expansion
Gemini Nano, Google’s most efficient AI model for on-device tasks, is now available on Pixel 8 and Pixel 8a. This feature, accessible via developer options, enhances the device’s AI capabilities.
Advanced Transcription with Recorder App
The Recorder app on Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro, and Pixel 8a now provides more detailed, downloadable summaries powered by Gemini. It can detect and include speaker names, making it easier to track conversations, interviews, and lectures. Users can export transcripts to text files or Google Docs for convenience.
Big Screen Entertainment
Users can now enjoy content on a larger screen by connecting Pixel 8a, Pixel 8, and Pixel 8 Pro to a monitor via USB-C. This feature enhances the viewing experience for movies, shows, and presentations.
Enhanced Find My Device
The Find My Device feature now allows users to locate their phone even if it’s off or the battery is dead, with all location data encrypted and private from Google.
Improved Photography
The Pixel camera now automatically identifies the best moment in HDR+ photos, ensuring faces are in focus and smiling with a single shutter press. Users can also manually select the camera lens for greater control over their shots.
Reverse Phone Lookup and Google Wallet Expansion
A new reverse phone number search is available directly from the call log. Additionally, Google Wallet has expanded to India, allowing users to store and access items like boarding passes, loyalty cards, and event tickets.
Upgrades for Pixel Watches
Car Crash Detection for Pixel Watch 2
Coinciding with National Safety Month, Pixel Watch 2 introduces Car Crash Detection. In severe accidents, the watch checks in with the wearer and can automatically dial emergency services if there’s no response. It integrates with Emergency Sharing to notify contacts and share real-time location.
Enhanced Payment and Smart Home Control
Users can now link their PayPal account to Google Wallet on their watch, making payments easier. The Google Home app on Wear OS has been revamped for quicker access to smart home devices, allowing users to control their home environment directly from their watch.
These updates will roll out over the next few weeks, bringing significant improvements and new functionalities to Pixel devices.
