Islamabad, October 20, 2025 – The federal government of Pakistan has approved the National Wheat Policy 2025-26, setting the wheat procurement price at Rs3,500 per maund to ensure fair compensation for farmers and maintain adequate strategic wheat reserves.
The decision was taken during a high-level meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, which was attended by the chief ministers of Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, Gilgit-Baltistan, a representative of the KP chief minister, and the Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, along with senior officials and agricultural stakeholders.
PM Shehbaz Sharif emphasized that wheat remains the backbone of Pakistan’s agricultural economy, serving as both the staple food of the population and the main source of livelihood for farmers. He said the government aims to protect farmers’ interests, ensure food security, and stabilize the wheat market through fair pricing and transparent procurement.
“The government is fully aware of the challenges farmers face and is committed to their welfare,” the prime minister said. “This policy will strengthen Pakistan’s agricultural base and improve rural incomes.”
According to the policy framework, the federal and provincial governments will jointly maintain strategic reserves of 6.2 million tonnes from the 2025–26 crop. The procurement price of Rs3,500 per maund aligns with international wheat import rates to keep domestic prices competitive.
The new policy also ensures free inter-provincial movement of wheat to maintain supply across the country. A National Wheat Monitoring Committee, chaired by the Federal Minister for National Food Security, will oversee implementation and coordination, meeting weekly to report directly to the prime minister.
