Islamabad, July 17, 2025 – In a move aimed at stabilizing market prices and providing relief to consumers, the federal government has fixed the maximum retail price of sugar at Rs175 per kilogram.
The decision was announced by the Ministry of National Food Security and Research (MNFSR) following a high-level meeting chaired by Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain.
According to an official statement issued on Wednesday, the ministry clarified that the meeting led to a decisive outcome regarding sugar pricing. The ex-mill price of sugar has been set at Rs165 per kilogram, while the retail price is to remain strictly within the range of Rs173 to Rs175 per kilogram.
The ministry also dismissed media reports suggesting that discussions between the government and the Sugar Mills Association had ended without a resolution. It reaffirmed that a firm decision was reached and a formal notification of the retail price is currently being finalized. This notification will be issued shortly after receiving the necessary approval from the Federal Cabinet.
The statement highlighted that the federal government has directed all provincial governments to strictly enforce the newly established retail price of sugar. Provinces have been tasked with monitoring the retail market to ensure compliance and take action against any violators.
Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain reiterated the government’s commitment to consumer protection and price transparency. He emphasized that controlling the retail price of sugar is essential for maintaining affordability in the wake of rising inflation and market speculation.
The MNFSR stressed that continued engagement with stakeholders, including producers, wholesalers, and retailers, is critical to ensuring the availability of sugar at fair prices. The ministry aims to strike a balance between supporting the domestic sugar industry and protecting the public from exploitative pricing in the retail sector.
The government’s intervention comes as part of broader efforts to regulate essential commodities and curb profiteering. By setting a maximum retail price for sugar, authorities hope to create a stable, predictable pricing environment and prevent unnecessary burdens on the end consumer.
