wheat exemption

Islamabad, February 22, 2026 – The National Wheat Oversight Committee announced that the illustrative wheat procurement price has been fixed at Rs3,500 per 40 kilograms, with provinces briefed to ensure smooth implementation of procurement operations ahead of the new harvesting season.

The announcement came during the 6th meeting of the National Wheat Oversight Committee, chaired by Rana Tanveer Hussain, Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research. The meeting focused on wheat procurement arrangements, stock availability, and price stability measures across Pakistan. Senior federal and provincial officials attended, presenting detailed updates on procurement preparedness, stock positions, and supply management strategies.

The Committee was informed that adequate wheat stocks are currently available nationwide, sufficient to meet national consumption requirements until the new crop arrives. Officials confirmed that there is no risk of wheat shortage, and coordinated measures are in place to ensure uninterrupted supply across markets.

Provincial Procurement Strategies

Provinces shared updates on their respective wheat procurement models:

• Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has adopted a hybrid model with 75% public sector participation and 25% private sector involvement, aimed at enhancing efficiency and market responsiveness.

• Sindh will conduct wheat procurement entirely through the public sector to stabilize supply and manage prices effectively.

The illustrative procurement price of Rs3,500 per 40kg will remain applicable for one year, while the federal government develops a comprehensive long-term wheat policy for 2026–2030. The upcoming policy will focus on digital traceability, enhanced supply chain monitoring, transparency, and sustained price stability, improving coordination between federal and provincial authorities.

Consumer Protection and Ramadan Preparedness

Special attention was given to consumer protection during Ramadan. The Federal Minister instructed provinces to implement strict market monitoring and take administrative measures to prevent unnecessary increases in flour prices.

Reaffirming the government’s commitment to food security, Rana Tanveer Hussain emphasized that coordinated federal–provincial efforts will continue to ensure stable wheat availability, safeguard farmers’ interests, and maintain affordable prices for consumers nationwide.
