Rising pop sensation Gracie Abrams was overwhelmed with joy after receiving heartfelt words of appreciation from 1980s music legend Cyndi Lauper.
The two artists sat down for an intimate Musician on Musician conversation hosted by Rolling Stone, where they opened up about their careers, inspirations, and songwriting journeys.
Abrams, who gained widespread recognition after opening for Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour from March 2023 to December 2024, expressed disbelief when Lauper praised her emotional track I Know It Won’t Work from her debut album Good Riddance.
“When I was listening to I Know It Won’t Work, I started crying,” Lauper admitted during their conversation.
Shocked and moved, Abrams responded, “What? Don’t say that to me. I can’t believe you listened to any of the music.”
Lauper, who made history with her groundbreaking 1983 debut album She’s So Unusual, remains an influential figure in the music industry. The Close to You singer shared that Lauper’s music was an integral part of her childhood.
“My mom was so drawn to your music because she had a lifetime of instances where you sound-tracked,” Abrams said. “I’m more and more grateful that I was raised in a house where your music was always playing.”
Currently, Cyndi Lauper is working on a stage musical adaptation of the 1988 film Working Girl, preparing for her Las Vegas residency in Spring 2026, and continuing her passionate human rights advocacy.
Meanwhile, Gracie Abrams recently concluded her The Secret of Us Tour, earning widespread acclaim for her raw vocals and emotional storytelling.
