GTA 6 fans criticise new user interface after extended preview

While Rockstar Games has earned widespread praise for GTA 6’s visuals and gameplay, the redesigned weapon wheel and minimap have sparked debate among fans.

The latest Grand Theft Auto 6 extended preview has generated major excitement among fans, with Rockstar Games receiving widespread praise for the game’s graphics, environments and gameplay. However, one aspect of the 26-minute showcase has become a major source of criticism: the new user interface.

More than 13 years after the release of GTA 5, Rockstar has significantly redesigned the interface for GTA 6, including its weapon wheel, player status indicators and minimap.

Following the release of the extended preview, fans quickly took to social media to share their opinions. The strongest criticism focused on the weapon selection system, which reportedly blurs the background while displaying weapons in large rectangular boxes.

Many players argued that the design appears inconsistent with the minimap, which uses curved edges. The contrast between the rounded map design and the sharp rectangular weapon interface has led some fans to describe the overall UI as visually disconnected.

Across social media platforms, several users called the interface underwhelming and said it did not match the highly polished visual quality seen throughout the rest of the game.

Community reporters and prominent GTA-focused accounts also joined the discussion, with some fans urging Rockstar Games to reconsider parts of the interface before the game’s scheduled November 19 release. Others jokingly suggested that continued criticism could result in another delay.

The updated interface provides important information during driving and combat sequences. Players can view Jason and Lucia’s inventory and status, while weapons and other items can be changed through the central on-screen overlay.

The top-left section displays health, stamina and focus bars, while cash information and wanted levels appear in the top-right corner. Medical supplies are shown separately in the bottom-left area.

The minimap itself features curved edges and has been designed to operate dynamically. It can disappear and reappear depending on gameplay situations, including driving sequences and police pursuits.

Rockstar is also offering players several customisation options. Users can reportedly switch between two-dimensional and three-dimensional map views, keep the minimap permanently visible or turn it off entirely in favour of a simple overhead compass similar to the system used in Red Dead Redemption 2.

The full GTA 6 extended preview is now available on Netflix, YouTube and Rockstar Games’ official platforms, allowing fans to examine the redesigned interface ahead of the game’s launch.
