Karachi, January 20, 2026 – The death toll from the devastating fire at Gul Plaza shopping Centre in Karachi has risen to 26, including a firefighter, as search and recovery operations resumed on Monday following extensive cooling measures. Rescue teams continue to search for dozens still missing, with Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab confirming 65 people unaccounted for.
The blaze, which broke out late Saturday night, ravaged the multi-storey complex on MA Jinnah Road, affecting the basement, ground floor, and upper levels. The Jubilee area of the shopping centre suffered severe damage, with the front elevation collapsing. A fresh fire briefly broke out on the third floor Monday morning before being brought under control.
Authorities reported that 1.4 million gallons of water were used from seven hydrants across Karachi to extinguish the fire. Firefighters battled flames for over 36 hours, but officials warned that the building remains extremely unstable, posing a serious risk of collapse.
Rescue teams have recovered several bodies, including a child, while mobile phone data is being used to trace missing persons. Police and CPLC officials have contacted families and established a helpline for information on the missing. Injured victims, mainly due to smoke inhalation and burns, have been treated at Jinnah Hospital and other trauma centres, with many discharged after first aid.
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah visited the site, confirming 26 fire tenders, four snorkels, and 10 water bowsers participated in the operation. He announced Rs10 million compensation for families of the deceased and promised rehabilitation and temporary spaces for affected shopkeepers. Preliminary reports suggest the fire may have started from a short circuit in a shop containing flammable materials, though a forensic investigation will confirm the cause.
A fact-finding committee, led by the Karachi commissioner and supported by forensic experts from Lahore, will investigate the incident. Meanwhile, the Sindh government has ordered the immediate implementation of Fire Safety Audit 2024 across commercial buildings.
Officials stressed that rescue and debris clearance remain ongoing, and public cooperation is crucial. Families of missing individuals are being supported by the Edhi Foundation and CPLC, with DNA testing planned to identify unrecognisable bodies.
The Gul Plaza fire highlights the urgent need for enhanced fire safety measures and regulatory oversight in Karachi’s commercial areas to prevent future tragedies.
