Gunn Drops Superman Early for Fans Worldwide

James Gunn has officially confirmed that Superman will arrive early on digital platforms — including Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home — giving fans the chance to enjoy the blockbuster at home ahead of Peacemaker Season 2’s premiere on August 21 on HBO Max.

According to Variety, the decision follows the enormous success of Superman, which has become a major win for Warner Bros. and DC Studios while launching Gunn’s reimagined DC Universe. The next entry in that universe, Peacemaker Season 2, will directly tie into the events of Superman and feature new characters such as Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced) and Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion), alongside John Cena’s fan-favorite antihero.

While the move ensures more people can catch up before the next DCU chapter, some moviegoers have voiced frustration at the quick digital turnaround. The film remains a strong box-office performer, grossing $334 million domestically and approaching $600 million worldwide. Even in its fifth weekend, Superman managed to earn an impressive $7 million.

When ScreenRant commented that it was “heartbreaking” to see the movie go digital so soon because they enjoy a long theatrical run, Gunn agreed, responding, “Me too.” He elaborated, “It’s very complicated, but honestly, it’s because of Peacemaker. I thought it was going to come out later, but things changed, and I wanted everyone to see Superman, even those who couldn’t make it to theaters before Peacemaker.”

Gunn acknowledged that many factors were beyond his control but emphasized that connecting audiences to the story was the top priority. Despite the early digital debut, Superman will continue screening in theaters for those who want the big-screen experience — the way many fans still believe superheroes are meant to be seen.
