GWM Cannon Alpha Recalled Over Power Steering Safety Defect

POER

Great Wall Motors (GWM) Australia has announced an urgent recall for its popular Cannon Alpha ute, citing a critical electric power steering issue.

The recall affects nearly 2,500 vehicles, spanning diesel, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid models built between 2023 and 2025.

According to the recall notice, the problem stems from a manufacturing fault in the Electric Power Steering (EPS) wiring harness. The harness may rub against the driveshaft, which can gradually wear down the protective layer and cause severe damage.

If left unchecked, this defect could result in a complete failure of the power steering system or, in some cases, an unexpected engine shutdown while the vehicle is in motion.

Such failures pose a significant safety risk, as the sudden loss of steering control or engine power increases the chances of an accident, potentially endangering drivers, passengers, and other road users. A total of 2,458 units of the Cannon Alpha are included in this recall campaign.

GWM Australia has urged all affected customers to take immediate action by contacting their nearest authorized dealership.

The company confirmed that inspections and necessary repairs will be carried out free of charge. Owners are strongly advised not to ignore the recall, as timely repairs are crucial for maintaining road safety.

In the event of experiencing power steering failure or an engine shutdown, GWM recommends pulling over safely, avoiding further driving, and arranging for the vehicle to be towed directly to a dealership.

To help customers verify whether their vehicle is affected, GWM has published a full list of recalled Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) on its official Australian website. Customers can cross-check their VIN and book a service appointment online.

This recall reflects GWM’s proactive stance on ensuring vehicle safety and customer confidence. The company emphasized its commitment to addressing potential risks before they escalate into more serious incidents.

Drivers are encouraged to act swiftly and not delay the inspection, as the defect carries serious safety implications. With utes like the Cannon Alpha being widely used for both personal and commercial purposes, resolving the issue promptly will help protect both road users and vehicle owners from potential hazards.

For further details and updates, affected owners should visit the official GWM Australia website or contact their local dealership.
