Karachi, March 17, 2026 – After days of intense heat, Karachi is set to witness a dramatic weather shift as the Pakistan Meteorological Department forecasts rain, thunderstorms, and even isolated hailstorms on Wednesday, March 18.
The city, which recently recorded temperatures as high as 38°C, is expected to experience partly cloudy conditions followed by rain-windstorms and thunderstorms, bringing much-needed relief from the scorching heat. However, the possibility of hailstorms has raised concerns among residents and authorities.
According to the PMD, the weather system will not be limited to Karachi. Several districts across Sindh—including Hyderabad, Sukkur, Larkana, Thatta, Badin, and Tharparkar—are also likely to receive rainfall accompanied by strong winds and isolated hailstorms.
Westerly Wave to Impact Weather Nationwide
The changing weather pattern is attributed to a westerly wave entering the western parts of Pakistan, which is expected to intensify and spread across the country from March 18 to March 20. This system is likely to bring widespread rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds in multiple regions.
At the national level, rain-thunderstorms are forecast in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, central and southern Punjab, Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Kashmir, and Islamabad. Heavy rainfall is also expected in parts of Balochistan.
Warnings Issued for Public Safety
The PMD has warned that lightning strikes and hailstorms could occur in isolated areas, potentially damaging standing crops in Sindh, Punjab, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Additionally, landslides may occur in vulnerable mountainous regions of northern Pakistan.
Authorities have advised tourists and travelers to avoid unnecessary journeys during the forecast period and remain cautious, especially in areas prone to severe weather.
While the rainfall is expected to bring relief from the heatwave, residents are urged to stay alert as sudden storms and hail may disrupt routine life in Karachi and other parts of the country.
