Australian captain Alyssa Healy has set her sights on leading her team to consecutive ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup victories, with the 2025 edition set to take place in India.
The wicketkeeper-batter is determined to play every match in the tournament after recovering from a string of injuries that disrupted her playing calendar.
Healy assumed the captaincy after Meg Lanning’s retirement in 2023 but soon faced a challenging phase due to injuries. She initially suffered a foot injury during the latter stages of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, followed by a knee issue sustained in the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL).
These setbacks limited her participation in international games, including a diminished role in the Women’s Ashes and absences during tours of New Zealand and the Women’s Premier League (WPL) in India.
Now on the road to full recovery, Healy is expected to make her return through the Australia A squad in a series against India A in Queensland this August. This opportunity is seen as a vital step in regaining match fitness ahead of the high-pressure ODI World Cup.
She acknowledged the demanding nature of ODI tournaments and conveyed her clear objective to feature in every game of the World Cup. Her primary focus remains on ensuring she can contribute fully to Australia’s campaign in India.
Victory in India would be historic for the Australian side, potentially making them the first team since 1988 to win back-to-back Women’s ODI World Cups.
For Healy, the motivation is not about personal milestones or the captaincy title. Her ambition is centered on helping Australia retain the title and create cricketing history.
Despite the physical toll of recent injuries and the inevitable questions about longevity in the sport, Healy has ruled out retirement for now.
She admitted that her perspective on retirement has changed due to her injury setbacks, as they reignited her passion to achieve more in cricket.
Her immediate goal remains winning the World Cup and performing during Australia’s home summer, with particular attention on the 2026 home series against India.
