Heatwave Grips Punjab, Temperatures Soar 8°C Above Normal

ISLAMABAD, April 14, 2025 – The province of Punjab remains in the firm grip of an intense heatwave, with daytime temperatures soaring as high as 8°C above normal, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).

The PMD has warned that the heatwave will continue to intensify across Punjab, with most districts experiencing hot and dry weather conditions. Gusty winds are likely in the plain areas during the afternoon on Tuesday, April 15. Daytime temperatures are forecast to remain 6 to 8 degrees Celsius above seasonal norms, raising serious concerns for public health and agriculture.

The current heatwave is being driven by a high-pressure system in the upper atmosphere, which is contributing to the widespread rise in temperatures across Punjab and other parts of the country. “This persistent high-pressure system has led to a build-up of extreme heat, particularly across central and southern Punjab,” a PMD spokesperson stated.

The heatwave is not only affecting Punjab, but dry conditions are also forecast for Kashmir, with partly cloudy skies expected during the evening and night hours. Temperatures in Kashmir are expected to remain 2 to 4 degrees Celsius above normal.

For Monday, the weather is expected to stay dry in most districts of Punjab and Kashmir, further extending the heatwave pattern. The continued lack of rainfall is exacerbating concerns about water shortages, heat-related illnesses, and stress on crops during a critical stage of the growing season.

Authorities have urged residents in Punjab to take necessary precautions to protect themselves from the extreme heat. People are advised to stay hydrated, avoid direct sunlight during peak hours, and keep vulnerable populations, including children and the old-age, cool and shaded.

The PMD has also called on farmers to manage irrigation carefully to mitigate heat stress on crops, as the heatwave is likely to persist through the coming days with no immediate signs of relief.

With no significant weather system expected to bring rain or cooler air, Punjab is bracing for an extended spell of scorching conditions as the heatwave shows no signs of abating.
