The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a significant weather forecast, indicating a high probability of thundershower in the upper Punjab region on August 23, 2023.
This weather development comes as the PMD’s daily report highlights a mix of hot and very humid conditions prevailing across most plain areas of the country.
However, relief is expected in the form of rain, winds, and thundershowers in several regions, including Pothohar, Islamabad, upper Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit Baltistan, and Kashmir. Additionally, there is a possibility of heavy rainfall at isolated locations in Pothohar, Islamabad, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and upper Punjab.
The meteorological situation is being driven by monsoon currents originating from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal, which are anticipated to infiltrate the upper parts of Pakistan starting today.
Simultaneously, a westerly wave is expected to enter the upper regions on August 23, 2023, enhancing the likelihood of precipitation and thundershowers.
Over the past 24 hours, much of the country experienced hot and humid weather. However, a few areas were fortunate to receive some relief in the form of rainfall. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, notable rainfalls were recorded in Dir (Lower 31mm, Upper 01mm) and Malam Jabba (01mm). Punjab also saw precipitation, with Chakwal recording 13mm of rainfall.
As the region braces for potential thundershowers, the recorded highest maximum temperatures in the past 24 hours stood at Bhakkar, where the mercury soared to 45°C, and Noorpur Thal, which recorded a high of 44°C.
With the Pakistan Meteorological Department’s alert regarding the high probability of thundershowers in the upper Punjab region on August 23, 2023, residents and authorities in these areas are advised to stay informed and take necessary precautions. This weather event, fueled by the convergence of monsoon currents and a westerly wave, has the potential to provide much-needed relief from the scorching heat. Stay tuned for further updates from the PMD as the situation develops.
