High-profile IRS officer fired amid FBR corruption probe

Inland Revenue Service

Islamabad, October 1, 2025 – The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has dismissed a senior Inland Revenue Service (IRS) officer after concluding disciplinary proceedings on charges of inefficiency, misconduct, and corruption.

The decision marks one of the most high-profile actions taken by the tax authority in recent months to curb irregularities within its ranks.

According to the official order, proceedings were initiated against Atif Bashir (IRS/BS-19), who was serving as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) at the FBR Headquarters, Islamabad. The charges of inefficiency, misconduct, and corruption were framed under the Civil Servants (Efficiency & Discipline) Rules, 2020, following an inquiry ordered earlier this year.

Ms. Nabila Faran Baig (IRS/BS-21), then Chief Commissioner of the Large Taxpayers Office, Multan, was appointed as Inquiry Officer. In her report submitted on April 18, 2025, she confirmed that the allegations had been substantiated. A Show Cause Notice was subsequently issued to the accused officer on May 7, 2025. Though Bashir submitted a detailed reply on May 19, denying all allegations, the inquiry findings, coupled with the observations of the designated Hearing Officer, did not support his defense.

After reviewing the entire case record, the Secretary Revenue Division, acting as Competent Authority, imposed the major penalty of dismissal from service under Rule 4(3)(e) of the Civil Servants (Efficiency & Discipline) Rules, 2020.

The FBR reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on corruption within its institutions, stressing that accountability was vital to restoring public trust. The dismissed officer, however, retains the right to appeal the decision before the Appellate Authority within 30 days.

By taking strict action against corruption at senior levels, the FBR aims to send a strong message of transparency and discipline across the organization.
