Hot and Dry Weather

Karachi, June 15, 2024 – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a weather forecast predicting hot and dry conditions across southern Pakistan on Sunday, June 16, 2024.

According to the PMD, the majority of the country will experience mainly hot and dry weather, with extremely high temperatures expected in the central and southern regions.

The PMD’s forecast indicates that while southern Pakistan braces for intense heat, some northern regions might experience relief in the form of isolated windstorms and thunderstorms with rain. These weather events are anticipated in parts of Gilgit Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Kashmir.

Explaining the synoptic situation, the PMD noted that continental air is currently prevailing over most parts of Pakistan, contributing to the widespread dry conditions. Additionally, a shallow westerly wave is influencing the northern parts of the country, which may result in localized weather disturbances.

For Saturday, June 15, 2024, the PMD also predicted mainly hot and dry weather throughout most of Pakistan, with very hot conditions in central and southern regions. However, isolated places in Kashmir, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, southern Punjab, and northeast/south Balochistan might see windstorms or thunderstorms with rain during the evening or night.

The weather over the past 24 hours has followed a similar pattern, with hot and dry conditions prevailing in most parts of the country. Very hot temperatures were recorded in the southern and central regions. Isolated rainfall, thunderstorms, or drizzle occurred in Upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Bagrote, DG Khan, Kashmir, and nearby hilly areas.

Recorded rainfall in the past 24 hours includes:

• Kashmir: Garhi Dupatta – 3 mm

• Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: Dir (Upper) – 6 mm, Patan – 3 mm

• Gilgit-Baltistan: Bagrote – 1 mm

• Punjab: DG Khan – 1 mm

The highest maximum temperatures recorded yesterday were:

• Sibbi: 47°C

• Bhakkar, Joharabad, Jacobabad: 46°C

• Dadu, Gujranwala, M.B. Din, Nokkundi, Sargodha: 45°C

Residents in the affected areas are advised to take necessary precautions to cope with the extreme heat under hot and dry weather, such as staying hydrated and avoiding direct sunlight during peak hours. Meanwhile, those in the northern regions should stay alert for potential weather disturbances and follow any advisories issued by local authorities.

The PMD continues to monitor weather patterns and will provide updates as necessary to ensure public safety and preparedness.
