Karachi, September 22, 2025 – With only one week left before the September 30 deadline for filing annual income tax returns for the year 2025, many taxpayers are concerned about meeting the requirement. If you think you may miss the deadline, the law provides a way to apply for an extension.
Under Section 119 of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001, taxpayers can request an extension in the filing deadline by applying to the Commissioner. This facility is available for those required to file a return of income under Section 114 or 117, or a wealth statement under Section 116.
An application for extension must be submitted in writing before the filing deadline. The Commissioner may grant additional time if the taxpayer is unable to file due to absence from Pakistan, illness, or other valid reasons. In such cases, the Commissioner can allow an extension of up to fifteen days. In exceptional circumstances, the Chief Commissioner may approve a further extension.
It is important to note that while an extension allows extra time for filing, it does not alter the due date for payment of taxes. Any outstanding tax must still be paid by the original deadline to avoid penalties or surcharges.
Taxpayers are advised to act promptly and apply early to ensure their requests for extension are processed in time.
