Huawei Mate 90 Pro Max launches with 1-inch modular camera

Huawei’s new flagship features a 12,000-nit OLED display, 6,800mAh battery and a detachable camera module with 10x continuous optical zoom.

Huawei has unveiled the Mate 90 Pro Max in China as the top model in its latest Mate 90 series, bringing a large 6.9-inch display, a triple rear camera system and support for an unusual modular camera attachment.

The phone features a 50MP main camera using a 1/1.28-inch RYYB sensor with optical image stabilisation (OIS) and a continuous variable aperture ranging from f/1.4 to f/4.0.

It is joined by a 200MP periscope telephoto camera with a 1/1.28-inch RYYB sensor, OIS and 4x optical zoom. A 40MP ultrawide camera and a third-generation Red Maple colour sensor complete the rear camera system.

For selfies, the Mate 90 Pro Max includes a 13MP ultrawide camera alongside a 3D depth-sensing camera.

Huawei is also offering a Collector’s Edition compatible with its Ruiying Z10 external camera module. The accessory features its own 1-inch RYYB sensor and supports 10x continuous optical zoom, with a 24–240mm focal range and an aperture range of f/2.0 to f/4.5.

On the front, the Mate 90 Pro Max has a 6.9-inch dual-layer LTPO OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. Huawei claims a peak brightness of up to 12,000 nits, making the display one of the phone’s key specifications.

The flagship is powered by the Kirin 9050 Pro chipset and runs Huawei’s HarmonyOS 7. The 12GB RAM variants, however, use the standard Kirin 9050 chipset.

Power comes from a 6,800mAh battery supporting 100W wired and 50W wireless charging. Connectivity features include Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, StarLight E2.0, NFC and eSIM. The handset also carries an IP69 rating for resistance against dust and water.

The Mate 90 Pro Max is available in Crystal White, Emerald Green, Obsidian Black and Rose Gold. The Collector’s Edition is offered in Emerald Green.
