SBP reserves rise by $39 million, while commercial banks’ holdings fall by $78 million

KARACHI: Pakistan’s total liquid foreign exchange reserves declined by $39 million to $26.771 billion during the week ended September 25, 2026, according to data released by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) on Thursday.

The country’s total reserves stood at $26.81 billion a week earlier on September 18.

The latest figures showed contrasting movements in reserves held by the central bank and commercial banks.

The SBP’s reserves increased by $39 million to $21.439 billion from $21.40 billion in the previous week.

Meanwhile, foreign exchange reserves held by commercial banks fell by $78 million to $5.332 billion, compared with $5.41 billion a week earlier.

Despite the decline in commercial banks’ holdings, Pakistan’s overall foreign exchange reserves remained broadly stable during the week.

The external position could receive support from additional financing expected in the coming months, particularly after the completion of the ongoing review under the International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme.

However, external debt repayments remain a key factor for the reserves outlook. The timing of future inflows and scheduled external obligations will continue to influence Pakistan’s foreign exchange position.

The latest data comes as authorities continue efforts to strengthen external stability, improve foreign exchange liquidity and maintain sufficient reserves to meet international payment requirements.
