Hyundai is intensifying its presence in China’s electric vehicle (EV) market with the introduction of the all-new Hyundai Elexio SUV.
Developed under the Beijing Hyundai joint venture with BAIC, the Elexio aims to redefine the company’s EV strategy in the world’s largest electric vehicle market.
The SUV is backed by a powerful 312 hp dual-motor setup and a strategic collaboration with Chinese battery leader BYD.
The vehicle has been revealed through Hyundai’s recent application for regulatory approval with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), unveiling key details.
Built on Hyundai’s advanced Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), the Elexio features an 800V architecture and fast-charging capability.
The SUV will be offered in two configurations: a front-wheel-drive (FWD) version with a 160 kW (214 hp) motor and an all-wheel-drive (AWD) version that combines a 160 kW front motor with a 73 kW rear motor, producing a total output of 233 kW (312 hp). Both variants offer a top speed of 185 km/h.
Measuring 4615mm in length, 1875mm in width, and 1673mm in height with a 2750mm wheelbase, the five-seat Elexio promises a spacious and comfortable interior.
However, the standout feature lies beneath the floor—its battery. Hyundai has partnered with BYD’s FinDreams division to supply a Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery pack.
Though exact capacity figures remain undisclosed, the Elexio is expected to deliver a China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC) range of up to 700 km (around 435 miles).
First previewed at the Shanghai Auto Show in April and officially unveiled on May 8, the Elexio marks a significant shift for Beijing Hyundai toward electrification.
The automaker has announced plans to expand its new energy vehicle (NEV) lineup in China over the next two years, including more BEVs, PHEVs, and EREVs.
Expected to launch in the third quarter of 2025, the Hyundai Elexio will be priced from approximately 140,000 yuan (roughly 19,500 USD).
With competitive pricing, BYD battery technology, and impressive specifications, the Elexio is poised to become a strong contender in China’s highly competitive electric SUV market.
