Hyundai Recalls Elantra Hybrids Over Overheating Risk

Automotive

Hyundai Motor Company has announced a major recall affecting more than 54,000 Elantra Hybrid sedans after identifying a potential overheating issue in the vehicles’ hybrid power system.

The recall impacts selected 2024, 2025, and 2026 model-year Elantra Hybrids sold in various markets.

According to recall documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the issue is linked to the hybrid power control unit (HPCU), a critical component responsible for managing electrical power in the hybrid system.

The automaker revealed that a metal-oxide semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET) inside the HPCU may overheat during periods of high electrical demand.

Investigations showed that the currently installed software may not provide sufficient cooling protection for the component, potentially causing thermal damage inside the unit.

If the overheating occurs, drivers may notice several warning signs. The affected Elantra Hybrid models could automatically switch into a reduced-power “limp mode,” illuminate the check engine warning light, or in some cases fail to start altogether.

Hyundai also warned that continued overheating could increase the risk of a fire, prompting the company to initiate the safety recall.

To resolve the problem, Hyundai dealers will install updated HPCU software free of charge.

The new software is designed to improve cooling performance for the MOSFET and reduce maximum current flow under heavy loads, minimizing the chances of overheating in the future.

Hyundai said notifications will begin reaching dealers and vehicle owners by July 13. Customers will be asked to schedule an appointment at authorized dealerships for the software update.

The company also confirmed that owners who previously paid out of pocket to repair the issue before the official recall announcement may qualify for reimbursement.

The recall highlights the growing challenges automakers face as hybrid and electric vehicle technologies become more advanced and dependent on complex electronic control systems.

Despite the issue, Hyundai continues to expand its hybrid lineup globally as demand for fuel-efficient vehicles rises.

Owners of affected Elantra Hybrid models are advised to monitor warning lights and contact their nearest Hyundai dealership for further assistance.
