ICC suspends USA cricket membership over governance

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has officially suspended USA Cricket’s membership after a detailed review of governance and compliance issues. The move, announced on September 23, is part of broader safeguards aimed at protecting athletes and cricket’s Olympic ambitions.

According to the ICC Board, USA Cricket repeatedly failed to meet its obligations as an ICC Member under the organization’s constitution. Key breaches included the lack of a proper governance structure, failure to progress toward National Governing Body status with the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC), and actions that caused reputational harm to the sport. These failures ultimately led to the suspension of USA Cricket’s membership with immediate effect.

Despite the suspension, USA’s national teams will still be allowed to compete in ICC events, including preparations for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. To ensure continuity, the ICC and its representatives will oversee the management of USA’s national teams, guaranteeing that athletes remain supported.

The ICC has also tasked its Normalisation Committee with providing a roadmap for USA Cricket to have its membership reinstated. This includes significant governance reforms and operational improvements. Until then, the committee will closely monitor USA Cricket’s progress while offering consultative support. The ICC stressed that the suspension is a necessary step to protect cricket’s integrity in the United States, while also reaffirming its commitment to the sport’s global growth and Olympic future.
