Spain national football team coach Luis de la Fuente has announced the inclusion of Celta Vigo striker Borja Iglesias in the squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifying matches against Georgia and Bulgaria.
The decision comes as Spain looks to strengthen its attacking lineup following the withdrawal of Lamine Yamal, who suffered a relapse of a pelvic injury that has sidelined him for the past month.
The 32-year-old Iglesias has been in excellent form this season, scoring six goals in 10 matches across all competitions. Known affectionately as “The Panda”—a nickname inspired by a popular Spanish rapper—Iglesias has previously represented Spain twice, with his last appearance coming in March 2023 during a 2-0 defeat to Scotland.
Iglesias is also recognized for his strong social principles. In August 2023, he temporarily stepped away from the Spain national team to protest the controversial behavior of former Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) President Luis Rubiales, following the Women’s World Cup celebrations involving Jenni Hermoso. He later returned to international duty after Rubiales was removed from his post.
Coach De la Fuente has yet to confirm if an additional player will be called up to replace Rodrigo Hernández, the Manchester City midfielder who sustained a hamstring injury on Sunday, as Spain prepares for its crucial qualifying fixtures.
