India battle through tough Oval conditions on day 1

London, July 31, 2025 – It was a day of fluctuating fortunes at The Oval as India ended the opening day of the final Test with 204 for the loss of six wickets, out of which 119 runs scored in the final session across 35 overs, losing three wickets in the process.

For the first time in the series, the ball continued to move even after losing its hardness, making batting difficult throughout the day.

India’s innings was a mix of resilience and missed opportunities. After losing the toss yet again—Shubman Gill’s fifth straight loss under cloudy skies—India were put into bat on a green-tinged pitch. Gus Atkinson, back in England’s playing XI, made an early impact, dismissing KL Rahul cheaply. Gill and Sai Sudharsan built a steady partnership, with Gill especially punishing anything loose. However, their stand was disrupted as a sudden downpour brought the morning session to a premature end.

Rain continued to interrupt the second session, allowing just 30 minutes of play, during which India suffered a major setback: skipper Shubman Gill was run out in a mix-up. The weather finally cleared in time for an extended final session, where the drama continued. Josh Tongue, though erratic, struck twice by removing Sudharsan and Ravindra Jadeja. Karun Nair, composed as ever, brought up his first fifty of the series and, along with Washington Sundar, ensured India reached stumps without further damage.

India will be encouraged by the mini-partnerships stitched together throughout the day, which helped them navigate challenging conditions. The hosts, meanwhile, are just one wicket away from exposing India’s tail and will be eager to press home the advantage on Day 2.

England’s pace attack was inconsistent despite helpful conditions. While Gus Atkinson bowled with discipline, others struggled with line and length. Josh Tongue had a mixed outing but made key breakthroughs. The injury to Chris Woakes—who left the field after injuring his left shoulder—was a blow to England’s bowling resources.

India will resume Day 2 hoping their overnight pair can push the score close to 300. Play will begin at 3:30 PM IST (10:00 AM GMT) on Friday, 1st August. With conditions still expected to aid the bowlers, another gripping day of Test cricket awaits at The Oval.
