India suffer first-ever home ODI series defeat against New Zealand

NewZealand

Indore, January 18, 2026 – India suffered their first-ever One-Day International (ODI) series defeat at home against New Zealand after losing the third and final match at Holkar Cricket Stadium, Indore, on Sunday.

With the win, New Zealand sealed a historic ODI series victory on Indian soil, achieving a milestone they had failed to accomplish on their previous seven tours. The triumph adds to New Zealand’s growing success in India, following their maiden Test series win in the country earlier.

Batting first after losing early wickets, New Zealand recovered from 5/2 through a commanding 219-run partnership between Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips. Both batters scored centuries, with Mitchell registering a career-best 139, helping the visitors post a competitive total of 337 runs. Contributions from captain Michael Bracewell and the lower order further strengthened the innings.

In reply, India’s chase faltered early as quick wickets left the hosts struggling at 71/4. Virat Kohli anchored the innings with fighting partnerships, including an 88-run stand with Nitish Kumar Reddy and a crucial 99-run partnership with Harshit Rana. However, the lack of support around Kohli proved costly, and India fell short of the target.

New Zealand’s bowling attack, led by Kyle Jamieson, applied consistent pressure, while debutant spinner Jayden Lennox impressed with a composed performance under pressure.

New Zealand captain Michael Bracewell praised his team’s discipline and resilience, while India skipper Shubman Gill admitted his side’s performances after the opening win were below expectations and highlighted areas for improvement ahead of future tournaments.

The focus now shifts to the upcoming five-match T20I series, beginning on January 21 in Nagpur, as both teams prepare for the T20 World Cup.
