Indus Motor Announces Weeklong Production Halt

Indus Motor Company

Karachi, July 12, 2024 – Indus Motor Company Limited has announced a temporary closure of its production plant due to a shortage of parts and components. The plant will be closed from July 15 to July 22, 2024.

In a statement to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), Indus Motor cited the low inventory levels of manufactured vehicles and the ongoing supply chain challenges as the reasons for the closure. The company assured that any changes to this plan would be communicated promptly to all stakeholders.

Indus Motor Company Limited (IMC) is a joint venture involving Pakistan’s House of Habib, Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC), and Toyota Tsusho Corporation (TTC) of Japan. Since its incorporation in 1989, IMC has been manufacturing and marketing Toyota vehicles in Pakistan. Its lineup includes various models of the ‘Corolla’ and ‘Yaris’ in the passenger car segment, the ‘Hilux’ in the light commercial vehicle segment, and the ‘Fortuner’ in the sports utility vehicle segment. The company has played a significant role in the automotive industry of Pakistan, providing a wide range of vehicles tailored to the needs of the local market.

The company’s manufacturing facility and offices are located on a 109.5-acre site in Port Qasim, Karachi. This strategic location enables IMC to efficiently manage its production and distribution operations. IMC’s vehicles are distributed nationwide through a robust network of 50 independent 3S Dealerships, which offer sales, service, and spare parts.

Over the past 31 years, IMC has sold more than 961,500 Completely Built Units (CBU) and Completely Knocked Down (CKD) vehicles. The company has shown significant growth, increasing its daily production capacity from 20 vehicles in 1993 to 288 units (with overtime) per day. This remarkable growth has been driven by the development of human talent and adherence to the ‘Toyota Way’ of quality and lean manufacturing, which emphasizes continuous improvement and respect for people.

The weeklong shutdown is a response to the global supply chain disruptions that have affected many industries worldwide. The automotive industry, in particular, has faced severe challenges due to the shortage of semiconductors and other critical components. Indus Motor’s decision to temporarily halt production is aimed at managing the current inventory effectively and ensuring that production can resume smoothly once the supply chain issues are resolved.

Indus Motor remains committed to addressing these challenges and resuming full production as soon as possible. The company is working closely with its suppliers and partners to mitigate the impact of the supply chain disruptions and ensure a steady supply of parts and components. For further updates, stakeholders and customers are advised to monitor official communications from Indus Motor.
