Islamabad, August 16, 2024 – Chief Meteorologist of the Pakistan Meteorological Department, Sardar Sarfaraz, issued a stern warning on Friday, forecasting an intense monsoon spell across the region until August 19. The forecast has prompted authorities to urge residents living near rivers to exercise extreme caution and remain vigilant to mitigate potential disaster risks.
Speaking to a private news channel, Sarfaraz emphasized the need for residents, particularly those near nullahs and rivers, to heed evacuation orders and prioritize their safety. “The situation is grave, but with proper precautions, the impact of this disaster can be mitigated,” he assured.
Sarfaraz further explained that monsoon winds are expected to enter lower Sindh starting August 16. Karachi, in particular, is likely to experience moderate rain accompanied by thundershowers between August 17 and 19, with the possibility of heavy rain in certain areas. He stressed the importance of being prepared for such weather conditions.
In response to the impending monsoon activity, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued an urban flooding alert for parts of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, effective until August 18. The alert warns of heavy rainfall, flash flooding, and urban flooding in low-lying areas, posing a significant threat to life and property.
Residents in the affected regions have been advised to avoid traveling to flood-prone areas and to stay informed about the latest weather updates. The NDMA has also instructed local authorities to implement necessary precautions, including evacuating high-risk areas, setting up emergency shelters, and ensuring the availability of emergency supplies.
As the monsoon spell intensifies, emergency control rooms are fully operational, and rescue teams are on high alert, ready to respond to any disaster situations that may arise. Sardar Sarfaraz reiterated the importance of preparedness, urging residents to take all necessary measures to protect themselves and their loved ones.
With the urban flooding alert in place, all available resources are being mobilized to ensure a swift and effective response to any emergencies that may emerge during this critical period.
