iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 18 Pro Max: Which model should you buy

Apple’s two flagship smartphones offer almost identical performance and camera capabilities, but the Pro Max delivers longer battery life, faster charging and louder speakers.

Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max offer a similar flagship experience, but differences in battery capacity, charging speed, display size and audio performance could influence buyers’ decisions.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max carries a price premium, but its larger screen is not the only advantage. A comparison of both models shows that the bigger device also offers improvements in battery endurance, charging and speakers.

Design and display

The iPhone 18 Pro weighs 211g and measures 150.0 x 71.9 x 8.8mm, making it lighter and easier to handle than the 249g iPhone 18 Pro Max, which measures 163.4 x 78.0 x 8.8mm.

The standard Pro features a 6.3-inch LTPO OLED display, while the Pro Max comes with a 6.9-inch panel. Both support a 120Hz refresh rate and offer 460 pixels per inch.

There are no major differences in build quality, ingress protection or available colours. Both models come in Black, Silver, Glacier and Burgundy.

Battery life and charging

Battery endurance is one of the biggest differences. The iPhone 18 Pro has a 4,056mAh battery, compared with 5,391mAh in the Pro Max versions with physical SIM slots.

The Pro Max performed better across all battery tests, with the largest improvements in web browsing and 4G calling.

Charging is also faster on the larger model. The Pro Max supports 54W charging, compared with 45W on the standard Pro. It reaches 81% in 30 minutes, while the smaller model reaches 74%. A full charge takes 55 minutes on the Pro Max and 62 minutes on the Pro. Performance and speakers

Both smartphones use Apple’s A20 Pro chipset based on a 2nm process and include 12GB of RAM with 256GB of base storage. Performance is almost identical, although the Pro Max delivers slightly better sustained performance during stress tests.

The Pro Max also offers louder speakers and fuller sound, while both devices share similar audio tuning.

Camera comparison

Camera hardware is identical across both models. Each features a 48MP main camera with variable aperture, a 48MP ultrawide camera, a 48MP telephoto camera with 4x optical zoom and an 18MP front camera.

Photo and video quality is broadly the same in daylight and low-light conditions, with no significant advantage for either model.

Verdict

The iPhone 18 Pro Max is better suited to buyers prioritising battery life, a larger display, faster charging and stronger speakers. However, the standard iPhone 18 Pro offers nearly the same performance and camera experience in a lighter, more compact body.

Ultimately, the choice depends on whether the Pro Max’s additional features justify its higher price.
