WhatsApp introduces Group Status and new features for chats

The messaging platform is rolling out four updates to improve group communication, message sharing and chat management.

WhatsApp has announced new features designed to improve the group chat experience, including Group Status, permanent pinned messages and a new unread chat filter.

The first addition, Group Status, allows users to share Status updates exclusively with members of a particular group. Group members can view, react to and like these updates, as well as share their own Status posts within the group.

Like regular WhatsApp Status updates, Group Status posts automatically disappear after 24 hours.

The update also makes it easier for existing group members to bring newcomers up to speed. WhatsApp already allows group administrators to share a group’s message history when adding new members. However, users can now share older messages with someone even after they have joined the group.

To use the feature, users simply need to tap the new member’s name in the group chat.

Another addition concerns pinned messages. WhatsApp previously allowed users to pin messages in group conversations for a limited period. The platform has now introduced the option to pin messages permanently, removing the time limit.

This could help groups keep important information, announcements and instructions accessible without requiring members to scroll through lengthy conversations.

WhatsApp has also introduced a new chat filter that makes it easier to find unread group conversations requiring a user’s attention.

The filter displays unread group chats in which users have either been mentioned or received a direct reply. It also includes messages sent using the @all mention feature, helping users identify conversations that may need a response.

The latest additions focus on making group conversations easier to manage, particularly for users who are members of several active groups.

By introducing Group Status, post-joining message sharing, permanent pins and a dedicated unread filter, WhatsApp is expanding the tools available to users for keeping group discussions organised.
