Islamabad, January 8, 2025 – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast a sharp drop in temperatures in Islamabad, with the mercury expected to plunge to -2°C over the next 72 hours. This cold snap marks the continuation of a frosty weather spell gripping the region.

According to the PMD, Islamabad and its surrounding areas are expected to experience cold and dry conditions on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, with gusty winds likely in the afternoon. Moving into Thursday, January 9, 2025, the weather will remain cold and dry, with the added possibility of frost during the early morning hours. Gusty winds are also predicted for the afternoon.

The PMD reports that continental air is dominating most parts of the country, resulting in predominantly cold and dry conditions. Islamabad, being centrally located, is experiencing similar weather patterns as the rest of the country but with slightly more intense frosty conditions.

Cold and dry weather is expected in Islamabad, alongside the broader plains of Pakistan. Hilly areas are predicted to endure very cold nights. Afternoon gusty winds will add to the chill factor in Islamabad and across much of the country, according to the PMD.

The PMD said morning frost is anticipated in select regions, including Islamabad, upper Punjab, Pothohar, Kashmir, and upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Moderate to dense fog is likely in northeastern Punjab during morning hours. Cold and dry weather will prevail nationwide, with hilly areas continuing to endure frigid conditions. Gusty winds are forecast for Islamabad and other regions in the afternoon.

Recent Weather Observations

In the past 24 hours, cold and dry weather dominated most areas, with hilly regions experiencing very cold conditions. Islamabad saw temperatures dip but avoided dense fog, which persisted in eastern Punjab.

Notable minimum temperatures recorded include Leh at -13°C, Kalam at -9°C, and Skardu at -7°C, showcasing the icy grip of winter. Islamabad residents are advised to take precautions against frost and icy roads as temperatures remain low.
