Islamabad braces for -4°C next week as severe cold spell looms

Pakistan Weather

Islamabad, December 13, 2025 — Residents of Islamabad are advised to prepare for an intense cold spell next week, as temperatures in the federal capital are expected to drop as low as minus 4 degrees Celsius, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).

The sharp fall in mercury will mark one of the coldest periods of the ongoing winter season in the city.

The PMD said that cloudy and cold weather is likely to prevail in Islamabad and its surrounding areas over the weekend, with colder conditions intensifying early next week. At the national level, the weather situation is being influenced by a shallow westerly wave currently affecting western and upper parts of the country.

Synoptic Situation

Meteorologists reported that a weak westerly system is present over the northern and western regions, contributing to colder temperatures and intermittent cloud cover.

Saturday Forecast

Cold and partly cloudy weather is expected across most parts of Pakistan, while very cold conditions will persist in hilly areas during nighttime. Light rain and light snowfall over mountains may occur at isolated locations in Gilgit-Baltistan, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Kashmir. Meanwhile, smog and moderate to dense fog in patches during the night are likely to continue over Punjab, upper Sindh, and plain areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Sunday Forecast

Similar weather conditions are expected on Sunday, with cold and partly cloudy weather dominating most regions. Very cold conditions will persist in hilly areas during morning and night hours. Isolated rain and light snowfall may again affect northern mountainous regions, while smog and fog are expected to linger over the plains during morning and nighttime.

Past 24-Hour Weather

Over the last 24 hours, weather remained cold and dry across most parts of the country, with extremely cold conditions in northern hilly areas. Smog and patchy fog continued to affect Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and upper Sindh.

Lowest recorded temperatures included Leh and Skardu at -6°C, Gupis at -4°C, Bagrote at -3°C, and Gilgit and Astore at -2°C.

Authorities have advised citizens to take precautionary measures, especially during early morning and night hours, as the cold wave tightens its grip.
