PMD warns of thunderstorms, strong winds and possible hail as unstable weather system persists over northern Pakistan

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast hailstorm and heavy rainfall for Islamabad on Thursday, warning of rain-windstorms and thunderstorms across the capital and surrounding regions.

According to the forecast issued on Wednesday, partly cloudy conditions are expected during the day, while evening and night hours may bring strong windstorms accompanied by rain, thunderstorms and isolated hail.

The PMD said weak moist currents from the Arabian Sea are penetrating southern parts of the country, while a westerly wave persists over northern regions. The system is expected to remain active until June 5, intensifying unstable weather conditions.

At the national level, similar weather activity is likely across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan and Islamabad during evening and night hours, with scattered thunderstorms and possible hailstorms. In contrast, hot and dry conditions are expected across most parts of Balochistan and Sindh, with very hot weather in southern districts.

For Friday, the weather department expects partly cloudy skies with intermittent windstorms and thunderstorms over northern and central regions, while southern areas are likely to remain hot and dry.

In the past 24 hours, isolated rain and thunderstorm activity was reported in several regions, including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Sindh, Kashmir and north-eastern Balochistan. Islamabad recorded rainfall at multiple stations, including Saidpur (34mm) and Golra (18mm).

Elsewhere, temperatures remained high, with nearby areas of Sindh recording extreme heat conditions reaching up to 45°C.

The PMD has advised citizens to take precautionary measures, particularly in areas vulnerable to hailstorms, strong winds and urban flooding, as unstable weather conditions are expected to persist over the coming days.

Authorities have also urged local administrations to remain alert for possible disruptions due to severe weather activity.
