Islamabad, August 15, 2025 – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a weather advisory forecasting heavy rainfall in Islamabad over the coming weekend, warning residents and travelers to prepare for potential flash floods, landslides, and infrastructure damage.
According to the PMD, Friday night will bring cloudy skies accompanied by rain-wind/thundershower activity in Islamabad and surrounding areas, with isolated heavy falls possible. On Saturday, similar weather conditions are expected, with the likelihood of heavy rainfall during the morning and night hours.
At the national level, the PMD cautioned that intense rains could trigger flash floods in local streams and nullahs in Upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, the Pothohar region, and northeast Punjab. Vulnerable hilly areas such as Murree, Galliyat, and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa may also face landslides or mudslides, potentially leading to road closures. Strong winds, heavy rainfall, and lightning may damage weak structures, electric poles, billboards, solar panels, and vehicles. The public, tourists, and commuters are advised to avoid unnecessary exposure and monitor updated weather alerts.
Synoptic Situation:
A seasonal low lies over north Balochistan, with moist currents from the Arabian Sea penetrating the upper parts of the country. A westerly wave is also influencing weather in northern regions.
Forecast Details:
• Friday: Partly cloudy to cloudy weather with rain-wind/thundershower in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, Upper Punjab, northeastern/southern Balochistan, southeastern Sindh, and Gilgit-Baltistan. Isolated heavy falls expected in Upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Potohar region, and Kashmir.
• Saturday: Rainfall accompanied by wind and thunder in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, Islamabad, Potohar region, northeast Punjab, and Gilgit-Baltistan, with possible heavy falls in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Potohar region, and Kashmir. Evening and night showers likely in northeast/south Balochistan, south Punjab, and southeast Sindh.
Past 24 Hours:
Islamabad and several northern regions experienced rain-thundershower activity, with significant rainfall recorded in Saidpur (45 mm), Zero Point (24 mm), and Bokra and Golra (16 mm each). The heaviest rainfall was observed in Lower Dir (98 mm) and Malam Jabba (76 mm).
The PMD has emphasized that residents of Islamabad should take extra precautions this weekend, as the forecasted heavy rainfall could cause urban flooding in low-lying areas and disrupt travel plans.
