Islamabad braces for more thundershowers in coming days

Weather Forecast Thundershowers

Islamabad, June 21, 2025 – The capital city of Islamabad is expected to experience a spell of thundershowers over the weekend, as per the latest weather advisory issued by the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Saturday.

This comes as moist currents from the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal combine with a westerly wave approaching the northern regions of the country.

According to PMD forecasts, Islamabad is likely to witness partly cloudy skies on Saturday, June 21, with chances of duststorms, rain-wind, or thundershowers during the night hours. The probability of precipitation, including isolated heavyfalls, has been assessed at around 60%. Conditions on Sunday, June 22, are expected to follow a similar pattern, with thundershowers likely to hit Islamabad during the evening or nighttime. The chances for these events have been raised to 65% due to intensifying moisture inflows.

In addition to Islamabad, regions such as Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Upper Punjab, and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are also forecast to receive dust-windstorms and scattered thundershowers. The PMD warns of isolated incidents of heavy rainfall particularly in Kashmir and the upper stretches of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which could lead to urban flooding or localized disruptions.

Saturday’s weather across the country is expected to remain predominantly hot and humid, especially in southern and central areas. However, a break from the heat may be witnessed in Islamabad and adjoining areas if the forecasted thundershower materializes.

Over the past 24 hours, several regions—including Islamabad—have already received rain coupled with thunder and gusty winds. In the capital, rainfall readings included 23mm at Saidpur, 7mm at Golra, and 4mm at Zero Point. These thundershowers provided brief relief from persistent heat but were accompanied by increased humidity.

PMD officials advise residents of Islamabad to remain cautious, especially during nighttime hours when thundershowers are most probable. With frequent weather fluctuations and the increasing likelihood of storms, Islamabad continues to brace for more thundershower activity in the coming days. Travelers and commuters are urged to stay updated through official PMD channels and to take precautions against sudden weather changes.
