Islamabad braces for weekend weather storms: PMD alert

Thudershower

Islamabad, May 30, 2025 – A dramatic shift in weather is looming over the federal capital, as Islamabad is expected to be rocked by a series of storms this weekend, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).

With ominous skies on the horizon, residents of Islamabad are being warned to prepare for a turbulent weekend marked by thunder, lightning, hail, and torrential downpours.

The PMD’s updated forecast for Saturday, May 31, reveals a staggering 60% probability of intense weather activity. These storms could bring a dangerous mix of heavy rainfalls, hailstorms, windstorms, and thunderstorms — all striking at isolated locations across Islamabad. Friday’s outlook also predicts a 45% chance of storms in and around the capital, with localized hail and heavy showers a real threat.

This surge in extreme weather is being fueled by a potent westerly wave, currently affecting upper regions of Pakistan. The system is expected to trigger not only rain and wind, but also damaging lightning and storm activity across Islamabad, Pothohar region, Northeast Punjab, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan.

According to the PMD, the impact of these storms may be severe. Loose structures like electric poles, trees, solar panels, and even vehicles are at high risk of damage. The department has urged the public to stay alert, avoid unnecessary travel during peak activity, and secure outdoor belongings to minimize losses.

Friday’s forecast calls for mostly hot and dry conditions in most parts of the country, but Islamabad is expected to see intermittent clouds, duststorms, and possibly rain-thundershowers. Saturday will mirror these conditions, though the intensity and frequency of storms in Islamabad may increase, adding to the already high alert level in the region.

In the past 24 hours, Islamabad witnessed moderate rainfall, with Saidpur recording 22mm, Golra 16mm, and the Airport area 15mm — signaling that the storm system is already making its presence felt.

As the capital stands on the edge of a potentially volatile weekend, all eyes remain on the skies. Residents are advised to monitor official PMD channels and news updates for real-time warnings. The coming days in Islamabad are not just about heat — they’re about storms.
