Islamabad closes all routes to Red Zone amid heightened security alert

Weather Forecast Thundershowers

Islamabad, March 1, 2026: The Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) on Sunday announced the complete closure of all routes leading to the Red Zone due to heightened security measures. Commuters have been advised to avoid travelling in the area until further notice.

An ITP official told the Associated Press of Pakistan that all entry points to the Red Zone, which houses key government offices, the Parliament, and diplomatic missions, have been sealed off. Traffic personnel have been deployed at major intersections to guide motorists and maintain smooth flow on alternate routes.

The advisory comes in the wake of violent clashes outside the US Consulate in Karachi, where protests erupted against US and Israeli strikes reportedly targeting Iran. At least nine people were killed and over 18 injured after demonstrators attempted to approach the consulate premises. Security forces used teargas and baton charges, and local hospitals treated multiple casualties. The unrest has raised concerns about protests spreading to other cities, prompting authorities to tighten security in the capital.

In addition, ongoing Pakistan Army operations in Afghanistan against terrorist groups have also contributed to the increased security presence in Islamabad.

The ITP official urged the public to cooperate with traffic authorities and follow instructions to minimize inconvenience. For updates, commuters may contact the Police Emergency Helpline “Pucar-15” or the Traffic Helpline 1915. Authorities stressed that the closures are temporary and precautionary, aimed at maintaining law and order in sensitive areas amid heightened security risks.
