Islamabad, August 25, 2025 – Authorities in Islamabad have arrested five shopkeepers in Bani Gala during a surprise inspection aimed at curbing profiteering and enforcing official pricing regulations.
The operation was launched on the instructions of Deputy Commissioner Irfan Nawaz Memon, who has directed strict action against violators of government-notified price lists.
The raid, carried out under the supervision of Magistrate Mir Yameen, covered various grocery stores, vegetable outlets, and fruit shops across Bani Gala. According to officials, several traders were found selling sugar at rates higher than those fixed by the government, while others offered low-quality fruits and vegetables at inflated prices.
The shopkeepers involved were immediately detained and shifted to the Bani Gala Police Station for further legal proceedings. Officials confirmed that stringent action would be taken to discourage repeated violations and protect consumers from unfair pricing practices.
Magistrate Yameen stated that the crackdown in Bani Gala is part of a broader campaign initiated by the Islamabad district administration to stabilize essential commodity prices and safeguard citizens from exploitation. He emphasized that surprise inspections will continue in different areas of the capital to ensure compliance.
Residents of Islamabad, particularly those living in Bani Gala, have repeatedly complained about the rising prices of everyday essentials such as sugar, fruits, and vegetables. Many alleged that shopkeepers openly ignored official price lists displayed by the administration.
To strengthen enforcement, the administration has urged traders to maintain transparency in pricing and quality standards, warning that repeated violations could lead to heavier penalties, including sealing of shops. Helplines and complaint cells have also been established to encourage citizens to report instances of profiteering or substandard goods.
Officials noted that unannounced visits are proving effective, as they prevent traders from temporarily lowering prices to avoid detection. They added that these measures have already improved price regulation in several parts of the city.
The Islamabad administration reiterated its commitment to ensuring fair pricing and protecting consumers, warning that strict legal action will continue against profiteers. The arrests in Bani Gala send a clear message that such practices will not be tolerated anywhere in the capital.
