Islamabad, August 9, 2024 – The Excise & Taxation (E&T) department of Islamabad has introduced significant changes to vehicle registration and number plate regulations, imposing new fees and penalties for non-compliance. These updates are expected to impact a large number of vehicle owners in the Federal Capital.
According to a spokesperson for the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) administration, the E&T department has enacted strict new measures aimed at standardizing vehicle registration and ensuring uniformity in the use of number plates. Under the new rules, vehicles found to be using non-standard number plates will have their registrations canceled, and owners will be required to pay a re-registration fee to align with the updated standards.
The new fee structure varies depending on the engine size of the vehicle. For vehicles with engines up to 1,000 cc, the re-registration fee is set at Rs 5,000. Those with engine sizes between 1,000 cc and 2,000 cc will incur a fee of Rs 10,000, while owners of vehicles with engines above 2,000 cc will face a re-registration fee of Rs 20,000.
Motorcycle owners are also affected by these changes, with a re-registration fee of Rs 1,000 being imposed. The regulations are particularly strict on repeat offenders; if a vehicle is found to be in violation of the new rules more than once, the penalty will increase fivefold, potentially resulting in substantial financial consequences for non-compliant vehicle owners.
The primary objective of these new regulations is to bring uniformity and standardization to vehicle registration processes in Islamabad. By enforcing these rules, the E&T department aims to enhance the overall governance and management of vehicles within the city, ensuring that all registered vehicles adhere to the new, more stringent requirements.
The ICT administration is urging all vehicle owners to update their registrations and number plates in accordance with the new regulations to avoid the hefty fines associated with non-compliance. The move is seen as part of a broader effort by the government to tighten control over vehicle-related regulations and improve the efficiency of the registration process.
Vehicle owners are advised to comply with the new standards promptly, as the E&T department has made it clear that there will be no leniency for those who fail to adhere to the updated rules. The stringent penalties underscore the importance of compliance and the administration’s commitment to maintaining order on the roads of Islamabad.
