Islamabad likely to experience hailstorm on February 9, PMD forecast

Islamabad, February 8, 2026: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a weather alert predicting hailstorm at isolated places in Islamabad on Monday, February 9, 2026.

According to PMD, Islamabad and surrounding areas are expected to experience cold and partly cloudy weather with rain, wind, and possible thunderstorms during the afternoon. Hail may occur at isolated locations during this period. On Sunday night, cold and gusty weather is expected across the city and nearby areas.

Warnings for Northern Pakistan and Kashmir

PMD has also warned of snowfall in northern hilly regions, which could disrupt traffic and create slippery conditions in areas including Naran, Kaghan, Dir, Swat, Kalam, Chitral, Kohistan, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Shangla, Astore, Hunza, Skardu, Murree, Galliyat, Neelum Valley, Bagh, Poonch, and Haveli from the night of February 9 through February 10.

Additionally, landslides may occur in vulnerable areas of upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir during this period.

Synoptic Situation

A westerly wave is approaching western Pakistan and is expected to affect upper parts of the country on February 9 and continue till February 10.

• Sunday: Mainly cold and dry weather is expected in most parts of the country. Light rain and snowfall are likely in isolated areas of northern and western Balochistan.

• Monday: Cloudy weather with rain is expected in Balochistan and lower Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, while rain, wind, and thunderstorms may affect the Pothohar region and central Punjab in the evening/night. Snowfall is expected over hilly areas, with hail possible in isolated places.

Recent Weather Observations

Over the past 24 hours, cold and dry conditions prevailed across most of Pakistan, with very cold temperatures in upper hilly areas. Recorded minimum temperatures include:

• Leh: -11°C

• Kalam, Astore: -7°C

• Gupis, Hunza, Malam Jabba, Skardu: -3°C

Residents are advised to stay alert and take precautions, especially in northern and hilly areas prone to snowfall and landslides.
