Islamabad on Alert: thunderstorm, hailstorm to strike on May 30

Weather Forecast Thundershowers

Islamabad, May 29, 2025 – The capital city is on edge as a fierce weather system barrels toward it, bringing with it the threat of a power-packed thunderstorm, roaring windstorm, and a bone-chilling hailstorm.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has sounded the alarm for Islamabad, warning residents to brace themselves for a dramatic turn in weather starting Thursday night, with conditions expected to intensify through Friday, May 30.

According to the PMD, Islamabad is expected to experience partly cloudy skies followed by rain, gusty winds, and a fierce thunderstorm. The forecast includes the possibility of a punishing hailstorm and even isolated heavy downpours, with a 65% probability of occurrence on Friday. Thursday’s outlook is no less alarming, with hot and dry daytime conditions giving way to a volatile evening and night, as Islamabad is likely to be rocked by a thunderstorm, hailstorm, and gusty winds, with a 55% chance of severe activity.

A synoptic-scale westerly wave has gripped the upper regions of Pakistan, including Islamabad, bringing with it unstable atmospheric conditions ripe for violent weather. The PMD has issued a nationwide warning, alerting that windstorms, dust-thunderstorms, hailstorms, heavy downpours, and dangerous lightning could wreak havoc on loose structures like electric poles, trees, solar panels, and vehicles.

On Friday, the stormy saga is expected to continue with Islamabad and the Potohar region remaining in the crosshairs of yet another hailstorm-laden thunderstorm. The same weather system is poised to batter upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, northern Punjab, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan.

In the past 24 hours, the country sizzled under relentless heat, with temperatures soaring up to 47°C in Jacobabad and Turbat, while Islamabad prepared for what could be a storm to remember.

Authorities urge residents of Islamabad to stay indoors, secure loose items, and avoid unnecessary travel as the city braces for a potentially destructive hailstorm, thunderstorm, and windstorm. The skies over Islamabad are set to roar — brace for impact!
