Authorities in Islamabad and Rawalpindi on Saturday eased public restrictions and reopened transport routes, days after suspending movement without explanation, as reports emerged of a cancelled visit by a United States delegation to the federal capital.

District administrations in both cities said all entry and exit points had been reopened for private, public and goods transport. In Islamabad, officials confirmed that bus terminals across the city were operational again, with the exception of the Faizabad terminal, which will remain closed until further notice.

In Rawalpindi, authorities issued a similar directive, allowing traffic to resume across the city while keeping the Pir Wadhai bus stand shut for an indefinite period.

The easing of restrictions follows reports that a U.S. delegation had cancelled a planned visit to Pakistan for talks related to Iran, although no official confirmation of the visit or its cancellation was immediately available.

Transport services in the twin cities had been suspended on April 19, when officials halted heavy and public transport, citing security considerations and urging citizens to cooperate with law enforcement agencies.

Separately, Islamabad authorities announced the reopening of recreational facilities, including the popular Margalla Hills hiking trails, which will be accessible to the public from Sunday. Parks such as Daman-e-Koh and Lake View Park have also been reopened.

Officials also issued revised business hours under the government’s austerity measures. Markets and shopping malls will close at 8 p.m., while essential services such as hospitals, pharmacies and petrol stations are exempt.

Restaurants and food outlets may operate until 10 p.m., including takeaway and delivery services, while wedding halls and commercial venues are allowed to remain open until the same time. Sports facilities, clubs and gyms must also close by 10 p.m.

The developments signal a gradual return to normalcy in the twin cities following a week of restrictions.
