Islamabad sizzles under intense heatwave with no relief in sight

Hot and Dry Weather

Islamabad, May 17, 2025 – The residents of Islamabad are facing searing temperatures as a relentless heatwave grips the capital with no signs of abating.

Weather experts have warned that the ongoing heatwave is expected to persist for several more days, making conditions extremely challenging for citizens.

According to AccuWeather and other meteorological sources, Islamabad is currently experiencing one of its most intense heat spells of the season. The temperature in the city soared to a blistering 47°C on Saturday, with a RealFeel® of 48°C, pushing health authorities to issue public advisories. The extreme heatwave in Islamabad has prompted officials to advise people to stay indoors, especially during peak hours, and remain hydrated.

The situation in Islamabad is being described as severe, with UV index levels hitting extreme values, adding to the risks of sunburn and heatstroke. The lack of cloud cover and blazing sunshine is expected to continue, exacerbating the already harsh conditions. The capital’s infrastructure, including electricity and water supply systems, is under additional stress due to the rising demand for cooling and hydration.

Forecasters predict that the intense heatwave will grip Islamabad at least through Monday, with only a slight dip in temperatures expected. On Sunday, the temperature is expected to drop slightly to 42°C, still dangerously high, with no rainfall in sight. By Monday, while the forecast shows a bit of cloud cover and a drop to 37°C, the overall impact of the heatwave will remain significant.

The heatwave has brought everyday life in Islamabad to a near standstill during peak daylight hours. Markets are seeing reduced foot traffic, and outdoor labor is being discouraged due to health concerns. Schools and offices are also adjusting schedules in response to the soaring temperatures.

This is the fifth consecutive day Islamabad is under the grip of this punishing heatwave, and health experts warn that continued exposure could lead to serious health risks such as heat exhaustion, dehydration, and heatstroke. Citizens have been urged to wear light clothing, avoid direct sun exposure, and prioritize staying indoors during the hottest parts of the day.

As Islamabad continues to endure this unrelenting heatwave, authorities are urging collective caution and preparedness until a significant weather shift offers some relief.
